Default Started a new character today

Necro/Warrior wasnt a good group character i heard so i decided to start a new character today. I went ranger and im curious as to what i should go for secondary i was thinking either monk or warrior, but i could see necro being a useful one so all the professions appear to me as being a useful secondary.

So im curious as to your opinion. Also ranger damage seems to be a little weak.
Maybe its just me but it really seems to not do alot of damage. Ive even upgraded to a different bow i got from a collector.

Cool

Warrior secondary is mostly for specialized builds.

Monk and necro are both excellent secondaries, monk being the most obvious one.

But all profession combinations can work, using just the necro abilites you can save your groups in several missions. I'd just continue to play and learn from your N/W, in your situation.

Level 13 Necro/Warrior here, and I really enjoy the build. I specced Blood magic and Axes. I can deal a bunch of damage with my axe attacks, and I have pretty amazing (at least I think it's amazing) survivability with Vampiric Touch, Life Siphon, and Well of Blood.

If it turns out that people don't want to group with me in the later levels because of my build *shrug* I guess I could always respec and make my secondary something a little more useful. Right now, however, my buddies can make no negative comments about my capabilities in missions.

Oh yah, I originally did a Necro/Warrior in the Beta... worked pretty well, but most people don't invite/accept parties from primary necros... (stupid people in pvp who dont know how to play a necro... gave us a bad reputation )

Ranger damage sucks until you get Double Shot and Ignite Arrows, which the ranger trainer in the very south/middle part or pre-sear teaches. Then you can start hitting for like 30-40 damage in one attack to single targets, and over 100 to big groups.

My ranger is actually an E/R, more energy to play with, and looks better IMO. Also can add some spells into the mix. Right now though she has only ranger attributes.

Why won't people pick necro build for their team? That sounds pretty stupid. I always do the most damage in my team even if they're higher lvl

The proper way for attacking large group of enemies (necro/elemental around lvl9):

Animate Bone Horror (if available) > Aura of Restoration > Fire Storm > Flares > Putrid Explosion > Flares (finish off)

Woah finally found another E/R. So how do you like using bow vs. spells for damage output? Surely it can't match up to Fire for PvE crowds, but I'm thinking of upping my ranger skills for bow in PvP later.

I'd like to know why necro primaries are looked down upon as well.

Well your primary (soul reaping) is pretty situational... and totally useless until at least one person falls in a pvp battle(or so seems to be the consensus).

Since that is the casepeople say take the other class as your primary..

I have a Nec/Mes but I am heavy blood/curse.. Basically a soul barb hexer. Works wonders.

Necro primary is awesome... for PvE.

In PvP, Soul Reaping is nearly useless. Necro skills are awesome, but you can get those easily from a sub (no penalty attached,) and it's much better to have something like fast cast available in PvP.

A large number of PvE players have decided that since Necro primaries aren't so useful in PvP matches, they must just suck all-around. -shrug-

I think it has to do with a general misunderstanding. See, many PvP players say that the Necro primary is worthless because there are not enough bodies in PvP to make Soul Reaping worthwhile. Combine that with the fact that most often in PvP hexes get removed VERY quickly and you have a primary character that doesn't fill many necessary roles, and other primaries could fill the required roles better. I think that the Necro in PvP will have it's day, as a new role is discovered. But for now it is looked down upon. Many people have taken this and applied it to PvE, where it is definitely NOT the case. There are MANY corpses for use, and that will provide tons of energy. Not only that, hexes cast tend to live their life out, and do their job. Ever play a Mesmer/Nec (or vice versa) early on? Mobs don't have enough AI to get rid on the hexes that really hurt them. They tend to cast right through backfire, and continue to run up with faintheartedness on.

I would gladly welcome a necromancer in my party for PvE. However, if I already had one or two in my group, I might be careful of what types they were, just so there were enough corpses for everyone to exploit.

Very much agreed, I combined that with conjure phantasm early in the game to provide most of my offense as a Mes/Nec. I didn't realize just how good it was until I recently tried to go north of the wall with my War/Monk (smiting) in pre-sear. I was much more effective with the Mes/Nec.

Soul Reaping in PvE is great fun. If the group is tearing through monsters I can almost chain-cast Vampiric Touch and Well of Blood. Healers love me because unless the situation is really terrible they don't have to worry much about me.

I made this character (N/W) for PvE, and, honestly, I can see his shortcomings in PvP. He doesn't do anything particularly special-- he can't shut down other characters and his armor isn't super mitigation like a warriors. However, I really enjoy him in monster fighting, and I would suggest to the original poster that started a new character on the advice of his buddies: Don't.

I've been playing RPGs for a long time and the biggest (and hardest) lesson I've learned is that you should play the character you enjoy and ignore your "friends" who say your character won't be very good. After enough experience with your build you WILL be a good, skillful character, even if the public disagrees. More importantly, you will still be enjoying the character you wanted to play in the first place

The idea I had for my E/R was to basically be just a ranger, because I don't like how rangers look. So right now she just uses bow skills and a pet. Later I plan to pick up a conjure spell to add wind damage to each shot, and maybe some AoE spells. But she's just a lvl 12 alt. And ya, ignite arrows can't stand up to fire storm, but it's fun, and I don't really care about being "uber" or anything.
